The Studio and the School — On Typology

A confidential design studio in Southern California, a century of sealed space, and the case for letting the school back in.

Questioning a typology — at its most fundamental — is the start of any strong project. Every type arrives wearing its perceived ageless wisdom: a solution baked over centuries, dressed in a fluttering of contemporary relevancy, and rarely asked to justify itself. Why do our homes all look alike, organized around the same idea of a living space? Why does every shopping center prescribe the same functions in the same order? Why do we begin so few projects by questioning the blind belief in type?

At what point does typology become malleable instead of a defense — the "we have done this before" argument that underwrites so much of the built environment? The industry is comfortable behind its typological parameters, and that comfort hinders the evolution the work demands: relevancy in the things we build. This case study questions a century-old typology to find new expression for creative endeavors — the kind that do their best work the moment those typological crutches dissolve. And unlike the home or the shopping center, this typology has an origin story.

Every car you have ever loved began in a space you will never see.

1927: The Space Is Invented

The automotive design studio is a young typology with an old grip. In 1927, General Motors launched the LaSalle — by the company's own telling, the first production car ever designed by a stylist rather than an engineer[1] — and Alfred Sloan, impressed, established the Art and Colour Section that June and hired the LaSalle's designer, Harley Earl, to run it: the first dedicated styling department at a major mass-production automaker.[2] Sloan budgeted the new department at fifty people, ten of them designers.[3] Earl brought with him a habit from his family's Los Angeles coachbuilding shop that would define the studio's inner life for the next hundred years: he worked out the car's form in modeling clay, full-scale, instead of the wood models that were then conventional.[4]

Two forces shaped the space the new profession built for itself. The first was the annual model change — Sloan's program of continuous, visible newness — which made the unreleased design a company's most valuable secret.[5] The second was a turf war. Car bodies had belonged to the body engineers, and they did not surrender them gracefully: they dismissed Earl's designers as "pretty-picture boys" and altered studio designs on the way to production, and Earl answered by hiring his own engineers inside the studio walls.[6] Secrecy toward the outside; separation on the inside. The typology's parameters were set before the profession was ten years old. Earl was made a GM vice president in 1940 — the first stylist to hold the rank — and the studio had won its independence.[7] It kept the fortifications.

The fortifications got great architecture. When GM consolidated design and research at Eero Saarinen's Technical Center in Warren, Michigan — dedicated on May 16, 1956, with President Eisenhower on the program and Life magazine soon calling it an "industrial Versailles"[8] — the Styling section received the campus's most celebrated space: an aluminum-skinned dome, sixty-five feet high and 186 feet across, engineered so that full-size cars could be studied under perfectly controlled light.[9] The campus is a National Historic Landmark now, and deserves to be.[10] But the plan beneath the beauty codified the sealed space: brand studios closed to one another, guarded doors, design apart from engineering apart from fabrication. And the culture ran deeper than the plan. In 1957, GM's own design chief, Bill Mitchell, set up a clandestine basement studio — "Studio X," roughly forty feet by fifteen — hidden not from competitors but from GM's own management.[11] A locked studio inside the locked studio: secrecy had become the typology's load-bearing wall.

It still is. A working car designer wrote recently that the design studio remains "the most highly restricted location on any car company's campus," where visitors' phones are sealed in bags that cover the lens.[12] Prototype camouflage is an institutionalized economy with its own photographers and counter-measures.[13] And clay — Earl's clay — remains the medium at the center of the space. "Clay is still the best," a GM design director said, ninety years after Art and Colour. "It's a very flexible medium."[14] The typology has aged; its logic has not been re-argued. It has simply been renewed, generation after generation, like the standard it became.

The Studios Move Toward the School

There is a second map worth drawing. In October 1973, Toyota established Calty Design Research in Southern California — the first design studio opened in North America by a Japanese automaker, sited, in the company's words, "to best absorb the influence of the state's burgeoning car culture."[15] Honda opened its first American research operation in 1975; Nissan followed with a San Diego studio in 1979; BMW acquired the Designworks studio Chuck Pelly had founded in 1972; Volvo opened its concept center in Camarillo in 1986.[16] Ask why the world's automakers built their advanced studios in one coastal region and the answers are consistent: the car culture, the climate, and the creative cross-currents. "It's not just one industry," one veteran designer said of the region. "It's entertainment, aerospace, entrepreneurs."[17]

But there is a quieter reason, and it sits in Pasadena. ArtCenter College of Design has taught automotive design since 1948, and its graduates, as the college accurately puts it, "lead design studios at most of the major automotive manufacturers around the world."[18] The school's location is one reason nearly every automaker keeps a studio in Southern California; ArtCenter itself played a role in founding the industry's first advanced-concept studio in the 1950s.[19] The corporate studios came to California, in real measure, to be near the school. Which makes it worth asking what the school has that the studios wanted.

What the School Knows

Transportation design education is a small world with a remarkably consistent architecture. At ArtCenter, at Detroit's College for Creative Studies, at the Royal College of Art in London, at Umeå in northern Sweden, at Pforzheim in Germany, the pedagogy is physical and public. Students work in open studios with the shop across the hall — clay studios, car-sized spray booths, five-axis mills — and the work is reviewed in the open, week after week, pinned up and argued over.[20] An ArtCenter fourth-term studio is structured explicitly as weekly reviews building toward a painted one-fifth-scale clay model, replicating "the actual tasks, deliverables and conditions of a design studio."[21] At Umeå, students hold keys to the building — access around the clock.[22] Industry has always been in the studio: the RCA's vehicle design course was founded in the mid-1960s at Ford's instigation, its first students each sponsored by a manufacturer.[23] And the year ends with the doors thrown open, not locked — public degree shows where recruiters hire directly off the wall.[24]

The schools understand the adjacency of making and imagining as pedagogy itself. When ArtCenter opened its new transportation center in 2024 — 31,000 square feet inside a decommissioned supersonic wind tunnel, its doorways sized to drive full-scale cars onto the open studio floor, its materials lab set behind glass in public view — the faculty stated the theory plainly: "A physical model, as it develops, has more eyes on it, more time for review and discovery."[25] More eyes on it. That is the school's entire theory of quality in six words, and it is the exact inverse of the corporate studio's inherited plan. Tesla's chief designer remembers his student years in the same terms: "we were all crammed into small studios — and we became like a family."[26] The symmetry sharpens in Detroit, where the College for Creative Studies teaches transportation design inside the Argonaut Building — the building that was General Motors' first research and design studio.[27] The school moved into the space the corporation outgrew, and made it open.

Dissolving the Partition

Which brings us to a quiet campus in Southern California, where a global automotive manufacturer asked us to rethink its North American design center: 75,000 square feet within a 165,000-square-foot facility where concept development and fabrication already lived under one roof — separated, per the standard, by walls, doors, and habit. The brief asked for capacity and workflow. Read against a century of the typology, it asked for something better. It asked for the school back.

The design begins by dissolving the studio's oldest partition, the one Art and Colour built in its first decade: the wall between designing and making. Fabrication is brought into direct relationship with the studios — not visible on request, but simply visible. A new mezzanine level carries the required workstations, but its real work is sectional. It turns the studio into one continuous space in which a designer can stand at a rail and watch the object of their imagination take physical shape below — the full-scale model, Earl's own medium, returned to the heart of the studio and to the center of attention. More eyes on it. Sightlines run across studios that once kept their backs to one another, and the interior extends outward into programmed exterior spaces — Southern California's one inexhaustible resource, and part of the reason the industry came here in the first place — for the conversations that never happen at a desk.

The guiding idea, borrowed from the designers themselves, is a union of opposites — precision and intuition, craft and concept, fabrication and design — and the building makes that idea tactile before it makes it spatial. The material palette was derived from the company's own ambitions for its coming decade of design work, then pushed somewhere the reference books don't go: unfamiliar materials set deliberately against one another, the raw against the machined, the found against the engineered, so that contrast itself becomes the finish. A designer's hand should encounter the thesis of the building on every surface it touches. Materials that rarely share a space are made to — which is, at the scale of a fingertip, exactly what the plan does at the scale of a company.

The same conviction scatters the work itself. Rather than one field of desks, the design distributes spaces of different temperaments across three floors — places to concentrate and places to argue, places to pin up and places to disappear — the way a school campus has always offered its studio, its shop, its library, and its steps in the sun. No single space can hold every register of creative work; the school knew it first, and the plan simply stops pretending otherwise.

The crit, meanwhile, goes global. A digital arena — an open, stepped space that pairs technology with plain human communication — connects the studio in real time to the manufacturing and engineering operations that carry its work forward around the world. For a century the typology separated design from production by a wall and then by an ocean; the arena dissolves both at once. The full-scale model on the floor below and the factory on another continent are, for the first time, in the same conversation. More eyes on it — now from everywhere.

A studio connected to the world also has to receive it. For the designers and colleagues who arrive off international flights, a reimagined traveler's lounge treats arrival itself as a design problem: shower and spa facilities to recover the body, focused work settings tuned for re-entry into the day, and — most tellingly — natural light deliberately mitigated, softened against the fatigue and dislocation of jet lag. The typology has always known how to control light; in 1956 it built its most celebrated space, Saarinen's dome, to control light for the object. This space controls it for the person. It is the same craft, aimed at last at the people who do the work.

And when the work is ready to meet the world, it no longer has to leave home to do it. A 15,000-square-foot exterior ground is built for live broadcast product launches with the comforts any great event assumes — an outdoor kitchen and full catering infrastructure, the shade of mature trees, built-in seating — and the machinery the moment requires: vehicle turntables, and dedicated paths that carry a car from the fabrication floor to the stage without a trailer or a public street. This is the degree show's logic made literal. The school year has always ended with the doors thrown open and the work rolled out for judgment; here, the space where the object is made connects directly, physically, to the space where it meets its public.

The plan keeps the school's memory, too — and it keeps it, pointedly, in the basement. A level of parking below the studio is converted into a gallery and innovation lounge: quiet, secluded, comfortable, a place where decades of the company's work can be seen slowly, the way a school keeps its best thesis work — argued with, built upon. The typology's history makes the move sharper than it first appears. In 1957 the basement of the American design studio was Studio X — the locked room where design hid its work from its own company. Here the basement becomes the opposite: the space where the company sits, at its leisure, with everything design has ever made for it.

All of it is gathered at the front door. A revitalized entry sequence puts innovation and the product itself front and center — digital displays and immersive environments where a lobby's art program would conventionally be — so that from the first step inside, the making is in view. And threading the whole building is its quietest design feature: a controlled, strategically curated set of circulation routes that can carry a recruit, a journalist, or a partner through the full argument of the place — the shop floor, the arena, the gallery — while the undisclosed remains undisclosed, by geometry rather than by escort. This is the degree show's logic applied to recruitment, and the schools have always known it: work shown in the open is how you find your people. You cannot recruit the next generation of designers with a conference room and an NDA. You recruit them with a shop floor they can see.

None of this abandons what the typology legitimately guards. The studio remains secure; the prototypes stay out of the world's sight. What changes is who the secrecy is for. For a century, the sealed space kept the work from competitors — and, by the habit it built, from colleagues down the hall. This design keeps the first and dissolves the second. Precision and intuition, craft and concept, fabrication and design: a union of opposites. Which is, of course, a description of a design school — the last place most of us were allowed to be both at once.

A studio, at its best, is a school that never graduates. The automotive studio was invented in 1927 and received its cathedral in 1956; its habits have outlived the arguments that made them. The question this project asked was what a century of professional standard had taught the corporate studio to forget. The answer was never far away. The industry built its studios in California to be near the school. This one lets the school in.

This is, in the end, how we think about workplace — every workplace, not only the spaces where cars are born. Ours is an industry that publishes its answers in advance: each season a new vocabulary for making people comfortable at work, each list agreeing with the last, softer and friendlier and strangely the same in every city on earth. We hold a less fashionable belief. People are not soothed into their best work; they are invited into it, by spaces that know what they are for. So we begin every workplace the way we began this one — further back than the trend cycle reaches, with the typology itself on the table: what is this kind of space, who built it, what was it defending, and which of its walls are still load-bearing? Sometimes the answer is a mezzanine. Sometimes it is a reorientation, a courtyard, or nothing more than restraint. The answers cannot travel from one project to the next — but the question can. And the question, asked honestly, in this place and for these people, is the entire practice.
